Duchamp

Duchamp at The Fountain
In my opinion, it is impossible to talk about the contemporary practice of making art without mentioning the influence Duchamp continues to have even today. Without Duchamp challenging the establishment of the time (resulting in a  urinal being placed in an art exhibit) Warhol would've have leg to stand on when he presented his infamous  Brillo boxes nor would Jim Sanborn when he  recently placed a partical accelerator within the confines of the MCA Denver.

Nude Descending a Staircase
Duchamp not only challenged what we considered art by  introducing us to the idea of recontextualization; but he also encouraged us to see in a new way. His renowned work Nude Descending a Staircase remains an example of two dimensional design attempting to create the illusion of three, as it alludes to another dimension entirely, that of time.
